How do you defy destiny?

Helen Hamilton has spent her entire sixteen years trying to hide how different she is—no easy task on an island as small and sheltered as Nantucket. And it's getting harder. Nightmares of a desperate desert journey have Helen waking parched, only to find her sheets damaged by dirt and dust. At school she's haunted by hallucinations of three women weeping tears of blood . . . and when Helen first crosses paths with Lucas Delos, she has no way of knowing they're destined to play the leading roles in a tragedy the Fates insist on repeating throughout history.

As Helen unlocks the secrets of her ancestry, she realizes that some myths are more than just legend. But even demigod powers might not be enough to defy the forces that are both drawing her and Lucas together—and trying to tear them apart.

Starcrossed has a lot to offer: action, mystery, romance, and of course Greek mythology! I thoroughly enjoyed reading Josephine Angelini’s debut novel and I am anxiously awaiting Dreamless, the sequel.

We never get to see any of the mythological gods, with the exception of the Furies and the Fates. However, most of the characters are descended from the gods and therefore have Herculean-esque traits. It was fascinating to read Angelini’s take on why the gods disappeared from everyday life and how these heroic abilities had been preserved through the ages.

The main characters, Helen and Lucuas, are star-crossed lovers. Even though they are perfect for each other, destiny has other plans in mind. The two are constantly drawn to each other, despite their initial urges to literally kill one another. I loved watching their relationship progress, and it is a large part of why I am eager to read Dreamless.

In addition to the heart-stopping love story, Starcrossed is filled with fight scenes and danger that will keep readers on the edge of their seats. Helen has a lot of enemies, and if she doesn’t learn to protect herself she will end up dead. Therefore, she needs to rely on the generosity of a few unlikely friends to teach her self-defense and protect her when she can’t protect herself.

This heart-grabbing novel is definitely a must read for fans of Greek Mythology and epic love stories. Dreamless simply can’t get here fast enough.
